About

Experience Grounded in Real Life

Dr. Oren Amitay is a registered psychologist with extensive experience in psychotherapy, psychological assessment, university teaching, expert testimony and media commentary.

He has worked with individuals, couples and families across a wide range of ages and life circumstances. His professional experience includes private practice, hospital settings, psychological and parenting-capacity assessments, courtroom testimony and public education.

Throughout his career, Dr. Amitay has focused on making psychology practical, understandable and relevant. Whether he is working with a client, teaching a university class or discussing a complex issue in the media, his goal is to bring clarity without oversimplifying the realities of human behaviour.

His Philosophy

Facing Reality. Creating Meaningful Change.

Dr. Amitay believes that meaningful change begins with an honest understanding of ourselves, our circumstances and the choices available to us.

His approach balances compassion with accountability. Therapy is not simply about reassurance or avoiding difficult realities. It is about recognizing patterns, questioning assumptions, strengthening resilience and developing more effective ways of responding to life.

We cannot control every challenge that comes toward us. We can, however, develop greater awareness, skill and confidence in how we meet those challenges.

His Approach to Therapy

Therapy Shaped Around the Individual

No single therapeutic approach is right for every person or every situation. Dr. Amitay draws from several established psychological orientations, selecting methods according to each client’s needs, personality and circumstances.

His work incorporates:

Cognitive-behavioural therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, psychodynamic therapy, humanistic and client-centred therapy, emotion-focused therapy, interpersonal therapy, object-relations therapy and process-experiential therapy.

This integrated approach allows therapy to remain responsive rather than formulaic—grounded in psychological knowledge while focused on the realities of the individual person.

Educator and Public Commentator

Bringing Psychology Beyond the Therapy Room

Dr. Amitay has taught tens of thousands of university students across a wide range of psychology courses, including clinical psychology, personality, psychological disorders, human sexuality, gender, addictions, social psychology, statistics and research design.

His teaching has been recognized with Instructor of the Year honours—at two different universities in the same year—and he was also named a semifinalist in TVO’s Best Lecturer competition.

Beyond the classroom, Dr. Amitay has become a familiar voice in Canadian media. He has appeared on television, radio, podcasts and in print, offering clear, direct commentary on psychological, social and cultural issues.

Whether he is teaching students or speaking to a wider public audience, his goal remains the same: to make complex ideas understandable without oversimplifying them.
